He married ELIZABETH ANNA/ALLEN BROUN January 16, 1810, daughter of ARCHIBALD BROUN and MARY DEAS.

Notes for WILLIAM "BEAUPERE" SINKLER:
The title “Beaupere” was simply the affectionate form of the French word for “Grandfather”, which was the name
he was called by his family in his later years.

"William Sinkler owned four plantations along the Santee River: The Eutaw, Belvidere, Wampee, and Apsley.
The pineland town of Eutawville with its sandy hills provided a summer retreat from malaria for these
plantations' owners. The parish church was the Rocks Church. While the Sinklers were of Scotch ancestry, the
other families - Porchers, Gaillards, Mazycks, Palmers, Ravenels, Cordes, Marions, Dwights, and Gourdins -
were French Huguenot. The area was isolated, accessible to Charleston, which was sixty miles away, either by
barge on the Santee River or, after 1833, by railroad from a station at Branchville, some twenty miles by cart
or carriage from Belvidere.

"The Sinkler family had lived in Upper Saint John's Parish since 1785 when Capt. James Sinkler of
Revolutionary War fame and his wife Margaret Cantey Sinkler moved from Lower Saint John's Parish, where they
had been rice and indigo farmers, and built Belvidere Plantation. James's brother Peter Sinkler joined Gen.
Frances Marion's rebel forces and was betrayed to the British by his brother-in-law James Boisseau. Peter
Sinkler witnessed the destruction of [his] property before being led away to prison . . . .

"The Sinklers were avid hunters, expert farmers, and devoted horse racers." They owned many slaves, Charles's
father owning 103 and Charles himself eventually owning 195 with which he farmed three plantations.

Charles was an educated man, having received his Batchelor's degree from the College of Charleston in 1835.
He joined the Navy as a midshipman in 1836, and it was on a Naval assignment to Philadelphia that he met his
future wife.
