St. Mary of the Woods, IN, 47876, is a small village just west of St.
Mary-of-the-Woods College. It is several miles north of West Terre Haute,
IN. You can reach it by a couple of ways from the larger town of Terre
Haute, IN, near the west central border of Illinois. Take US. 40 west from
Terre Haute to West Terre Haute, about 2 miles. Turn north on US 150, and
proceed several miles until you see a large hill and a sign for St. Mary of
the Woods College. Turn left, west, and drive up the hill, past the college,
and you will enter St. Mary of the Woods village. I worked at the college
back in the 1980's. It's a lovely area. I don't know where any cemeteries
are, except that of the Sisters of Providence, whose motherhouse is on the
same grounds as the college. The nuns came there from France in 1840.
There is a Catholic church in the village, and the church is called St.
Mary's. The phone there is 812-535-1261. Don't confuse it with the church
on the grounds of the Sisters of Providence. I have never visited the
village church, and do not know if there is a cemetery near it. Whether
there is even someone there to answer the phone would be questionable. You
might want to call the Special Collections Dept. of the Vigo County Public
Library, 812-232-1113 to see if they have any information that would help
you. They have a cemetery map of Vigo County and records of some, but not
all, of the cemeteries. When I was seeking my Aunt's baptismal record in a
nearby small town, which occurred in 1913, I found out that the records had
been sent to the Catholic Archives in Indianapolis. So it's possible if
there was a record of the burial you seek, it MIGHT, and that's a big guess,
be in the Archives, if the person was a Catholic. Hope this helps.
